My definition of biodiversity is . . .
What biodiversity means to me is exactly what the word itself states, in the most broken-down form. "Bio," meaning "life" and "diversity" meaning "different". Biodiversity is the differences in all different aspects of life. From ecosystems to the varying genuses of species, "biodiversity" is the variety of all life.
After considering both sources and my knowledge of plant and animal biodiversity, the issues of biodiversity are related to the idea of threats to cultural diversity in many aspects. Firstly, how does every living human being in every culture exist? Simply put, because of the biodiversity of Earth. Without the variety of plants, animals, ecosystems, biomes, and the like; modern humans that create the culture in which we study would cease to exist. Biodiversity creates the ability for humans to live and create culture, of which is dying at an alarming rate. When biodiversity fails, such as rainforests suffering the fate of deforestation, it contributes to the loss of culture among societies. The loss of biodiversity equals the loss of a way of life, thus a loss of a certain manner, or culture of living.
As was stated previously, the deforestation of major rainforests is a prime example of how biodiversity contributes to the threats of cultural diversity. To support this idea, I will give the reader a scenario: Lets say that there is a particular tribe which has existed in the rainforest of Central America for 400 years, suddenly as the resources and living space becomes more limited and scarce, the life of the clan starts to change. The food becomes different, thus the hunting patterns change. The blessing rituals would be changed, and so on until a chain reaction of events occur, unravelling the very core of the tribe. So because of biodiversity, or the lack thereof, the cultural diversity is threatened.
My reasoning on this issue may be incorrect. This scenario could be completely off. The deforestation could have absolutely nothing to do with threat to cultural diversity. However, the opposite reaction to this scenario is not enough to change my mind. This is because I believe this to be a legitimate scenario of how biodiversity contributes to threats to cultural diversity.
